Engine cuts out until throttle is released and reapplied - Unintended Acceleration

Created by Craig Morton, Modified on Tue, 24 May, 2022 at 11:03 AM by Craig Morton

Toyota have a built in safety mechanism to prevent unintended acceleration.

If the ECU detects a combination of throttle and brake, the ECU will disable throttle input until throttle is released and reapplied. This will not result in any engine codes as this is expected behaviour.

Most commonly reported issues are the engine does not rev when accelerator is applied, or Engine appears to cut out until accelerator is released and reapplied.

Below are the most common seen issues to investigate post conversion

Brake Pedal

Brake Pedal over tightened

Ensure that the pedal is returning to its home (fully released position). If the pedal has been over tightened the pedal may not return to its home position.

Brake Pedal not calibrated

Brake Pedal position is not calibrated to the Master Cylinder linkage. Adjust as necessary.
